Where to produce E-bikes? Taiwan or China?
Oerus receives many enquiries about e-bikes and which transmission systems and batteries are available for production. Throughout the last few years, many of the cheap, open model electric vehicles were produced in China, while high-end, quality electric bikes were slowing increasing production quantity in Taiwan. With the European anti-dumping measures against Chinese e-bikes and the US-China Trade War tariffs, we are seeing a e-bike boom in Taiwan, Vietnam, and Cambodia.
Taiwan is actually a major manufacturing hub for high-end battery systems thanks to its huge tech sector of computer and electronics manufacturers. Some of the same vendors for laptop batteries, for example, are also producing battery systems for electric vehicles, including electric bikes, electric scooters, electric mopeds, and electric motorcycles. That said, the overall quality of batteries produced in Taiwan is much higher than China.
The major players in the ebike transmission arena, notably the mid motor brands - Bosch, Brose, Shimano, and Bafang - These brands do cooperate with Taiwan based OEM manufacturers. Also available are a variety of smaller players, such as Fazua, Trans-X, Panasonic, and Yamaha. The lead times for production in Taiwan is off the charts these days due to the large influx of new brands.
